We often recommend our cheapest "basket briar" pipe to beginners as it will provide plenty of enjoyment (and more importantly, you won't cry if you burn it or lose it!). It is also wise to start cheap because you won't know if you prefer a big bowl or small, a bend or straight, a churchwarden or a short pipe... you get the point. Just don't buy a composite (plastic!) pipe.
